5 Key Benefits to Plant Propagation

Updated: Sep 21, 2024

Propagation is one of the fastest and easiest ways to grow a new houseplant. All you need is a container, water, and some patience. For a how-to on propagation, check out our article entitled, “10 Creative Ways to Propagate Your Favorite Plants at Home

In this post, we’ll cover the 5 key benefits that plant propagation brings to your home.

1. Propagation doesn’t break the bank.

If you have bought a houseplant before you know they aren’t cheap. You are charged for the plant and its pot (depending on the store). With propagation, This problem melts away. You can use one of your previously purchased plants; the only real expenses you may have would be a pot and the soil. You can use pots that you may have at home. If you don’t have any at hand, get creative! I like buying nice white mugs from the dollar store and drilling some holes in them for drainage, but I have also used mugs or cups from my cabinets.

2. It’s super easy.

Most plants are simple to propagate. There are many ways to propagate different types of plants, and some can get a little tricky, but common houseplants are relatively easy to do. For example, any pothos plants can be propagated by locating a node and severing the vine a little ways below it.

3. You can customize your collection.

Some plants require more care than others, so certain people with busy schedules might want several of the same few plants that are low maintenance to fit their lifestyle. Work or stay-at-home parents have more access to their plants, so they might be willing to have more high-maintenance types of plants that they enjoy. Either way, having the ability to replicate and expand your plant pool is a plus.

4. They can be shared with family and friends.

With existing plants, depending on the maturity, you can harvest multiple cuttings at a time. You can gift them at any time, letting the people you give them to grow the roots themselves. Personally, I like to wait until the cutting has secondary roots before I plant or give them away. It gives them a better chance of survival, especially when traveling or planting.

5. You have a new plant to enjoy!

A new addition to your home is sure to bring an extra spark of joy with its greenery. Live plants add something special to my home that artificial plants could never bring. Plus, there’s a certain happiness and fulfillment that comes with owning and caring for a houseplant—especially when you’ve grown it yourself instead of purchasing it.

Propagation may not be planting a seed and helping it germinate, but it’s still the beginning of new life. You’re taking a part of an existing plant and nurturing it. Sometimes, it's harder than planting a seed! You won't always have success when trying to propagate, and that's okay. It's tricky! Take pride in your successes and failures—before you know it you'll have a jungle you created.

What will you propagate?
